If, there is a System Update available for your Android from the maker of your device, then you can install that easily.
Step 1. Check Android Version
Before trying to update your device, you should check which version of Android you are running. Your device might already be on the latest version. So, check the version from the settings. Go Settings -> About devices -> Android Version. If it doesn’t then go Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information. There, you can see the current operating system of your Android Smartphone or Tablet. In some devices, you may see About device instead of About phone.

The latest version of Android OS is Marshmallow with the version number 6, which will gradually become available for more and more devices over the coming months. On the other hand, Lollipop is 5.x, KitKat is version 4.4.x, and with 4.3, 4.2 and 4.1 all coming under the codename name Jelly Bean.
Step 2. Get Notified or Check Update Availability
If you don’t get any update notification from your Android manufacturer, then check is there any update available for your device from the settings. So, go Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates -> Software Update Check. There is a message will be appear called “Checking”. Then, if it’s already updated it show you the message “Your phone is up to date”. But, if there is a system update available it shows you the update info including “Download” button.

Step 3. Backup Your Important Data
Now, when you have the option to download and update your Android to latest version getting the notification or after checking update availability. Then, it’s time to backup all important data like- contacts, messages, pictures, app data, etc. from your device. Because, if there is anything wrong during the update process, you don’t have to lose anything. Simply, connect your Android Smartphone to Computer with a USB/Micro USB cable and copy all data.

Step 4. Now Go for Update!
Well, everything is fine and safe. You are going to download and install available Android system update for your device. At first, download the Android System Update using Wi-Fi only recommended, because the file can be large. After completing the download a window will appear with update description including the options – Install now, Install later, or Don’t Install. You may also choose Install now or later. Install now is already chosen, so tap on OK button to install.

Then, probably some kind of screen you will see the progress. After finishing your Android device will restart with the screen showing “Android is upgrading”. It will optimize your apps and may take few minutes depending on how many apps are installed.
